Talk to Us About Fortified Grants
If you live in a beachfront community, first of all, congratulations! Secondly, we need to discuss your roof. Along with those amazing views can come extreme weather events, which can damage or even destroy the roof of your home or business.
This isn’t news to you, as you’ve probably already experienced storm damage at one time or another. Generally speaking, you just have to live with it, right? Wrong. There is a new program available to some homeowners that offers up to $6,000 toward upgrading that existing roof structure to one designed to be much more resistant to storm damage. Interested?
What is the Fortified Grant Program?
This pilot program is being offered by the NCIUA, or the North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association. This grant offers up to $6,000 to qualifying policy owners to upgrade their existing roofing structure to one that meets FORTIFIED® standards.
FORTIFIED® roofs meet or exceed specific construction guidelines that have been identified by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS). The IBHS is an independent scientific organization that has conducted over 20 years of research into the factors that cause roofs to fail during extreme weather events.
A FORTIFIED® roof is structurally designed to provide protection through storms up to a Category 3 hurricane or an EF-2 tornado.
What Are the Qualification Requirements?
For this pilot program, the qualification guidelines are:
- You must be an NCIUA homeowner and homeowner wind policy holder.
- Your covered property must be along the Outer Banks and/or the Barrier Islands. These are rating territories 110 and 120.
- Your policy must be current and eligible and must have been in effect on or before June 1, 2020.
Or
- You must be an NCIUA dwelling and dwelling wind policy holder.
- Your covered property must be along the Outer Banks and/or the Barrier Islands. These are rating territories 110 and 120.
- Your policy must be current and eligible and must have been in effect on or before July 1, 2020.
Regardless of the above, ineligible properties include condos, co-ops, townhomes, triplexes, quadplexes, multi-unit residential buildings, residential portions of mixed-use buildings, and commercial buildings, along with others not listed.
What is the Process?
As you would expect, there are a few steps to the application and approval process. Roof Central is glad to assist you with them. Here is a quick outline of what to expect.
- Verify your grant application period and submit the grant application. Grants are approved on a first-come, first-served basis, with a total of approximately 1,660 grants being available.
- Once approval is granted, those funds are held for you until August 1, 2021.
- Obtain bids from contractors. NCIUA has a list of FORTIFIED® contractors available.
- After you have selected your contractor, an IBHS evaluator will be assigned to your grant.
- The IBHS evaluator works with you and the contractor. He/she will inspect your existing structure. Before, during, and after the construction of your FORTIFIED® roof, he/she will ensure that the materials and construction meet FORTIFIED® standards.
- Upon completion of your roof, the evaluator submits documentation that all standards have been met.
- Your roof then receives the IBHS FORTIFIED® roof endorsement and certification.
- Funds are sent to you.
Of course, this is a simple outline of the steps. As with any bureaucracy, accomplishing everything can be timely and overwhelming. Let us help you through it.
